If you are looking for an incredible highlight to a safari, adding a few days exploring Kenya in a helicopter with Extraordinary Journeys and Tropic Air is just what you are looking for! This 3 night program offers you access to the stunning scenery and unique cultures of Kenya's remote north.

Tour Program

Day 1 ~ Laikipia ~ Suyian Ranch

This morning, your private helicopter and pilot will meet you in Nairobi and fly north to Suyian Ranch in Laikipia, via the summit of the Aberdare Range. Overnight at Suyian Ranch.

The Laikipia Plateau is a vast expanse of wild country covering over 3000 square miles between Mt Kenya and the Rift Valley. The Laikipia Wildlife Forum has brought together privately owned ranches and communal grazing areas, creating an immense wildlife area. The ranches are actively involved in eco-tourism and conservation projects alongside local communities. Wildlife moves freely throughout the area and with few other tourists and the freedom to leave your vehicle, Laikipia offers a unique experience. In northwest Laikipia lies Suyian Ranch, privately owned by the Powys family, whose ties to Laikipia date back to the 1920’s. Suyian is 43,000 acre wildlife and cattle ranch has spectacularly beautiful scenery and unspoiled wilderness.

Accommodation is at Suyian Soul, a private simple retreat, that embraces all aspects of nature. Hosted by local and expert guides, Suyian Soul is a peaceful camp, with an infinite connection with nature. Designed and built by Anne Powys, Suyian Soul is hidden in a small valley, close to a natural spring that seeps water all year long. The rooms are simple thatched open bandas with safari style bathrooms.

Day 2 ~ Northern Kenya ~ Desert Rose

Today you will depart early, with a picnic breakfast, headed for the deserts and lakes of Northern Kenya. Overnight at Desert Rose Lodge.

The first stop is Silale Crater - a dramatic caldera. You will continue through the changing landscape of the Suguta Valley, over a flood pan dominated by green algae, and through the Painted Valley and Hoodoo Valley - which are characterized by dramatic eroded pinnacles and canyons. You will arrive at Desert Rose for lunch.

Desert Rose is situated in Kenya’s remote and largely untraveled Northern Frontier, 80kms South of Lake Turkana, 5,500ft up on the side of the sacred Mt. Nyiro. Desert Rose Lodge is truly a rose in the middle of the desert, offering views over the Northern Frontier and its breathtaking mix of color and stunning landscape.

The handmade equipment, stone-carved baths, wooden washbasins, open bathrooms are just a few elements that make this property truly special. The swimming pool, dining room, lounge and relaxing-decks all have views over the valley plains below. In the late afternoon you depart on a scenic flight to the southern shores of Lake Turkana, over Lake Logipi and on to the sand dunes of the Suguta. The world’s largest permanent desert lake, Turkana, is wild in character with its parched volcanic beaches, granite outcrops and lava flows. The lake’s shores have revealed some of the world’s oldest fossil finds –from dinosaurs to early Man– discovered by the famous palaeontologists – the Leakey family.

Day 3 ~ Melako Conservancy ~ Fly Camp

After breakfast you fly south over the remote northern part of Samburu country, landing by the ‘Singing Wells’ where Samburu herdsmen draw water for their livestock from deep wells in the river bed whilst they sing traditional songs.

You will continue on to the newly formed Melako Conservancy - part of a group of Kenyan community-owned conservancies. The conservancy is remote and tourism development is nonexistent. Yet the opportunities are great, and from the base of a simple desert style tented camp, perfectly positioned on the banks of dry sandy river bed beneath large shady acacia trees. You will explore the region and enjoy its unique wildlife by Quad Bike. You will overnight in a simple but comfortable fly-camp set up on banks of a sandy river bed, with pop-up mosie-net style tents for a night under the starry sky. Overnight at Melako Conservancy Fly Camp

Day 4 ~ Melako Conservancy ~ Quad Bikes

This morning you will explore more of Melako on Quad Bikes before heading back to the helicopter.

Enjoy another spectacular flight, over the Ewaso Nyiro river, and savannah plains of Samburu, quietly spotting wildlife along the way. Your adventure ends at Lewa / Laikipia or Samburu for the rest of your Kenya adventure.
