Best of the Great Rift Valley, off the beaten track, lots of adventurous activities, beautiful scenery, Masai culture, possibility to see 'big five' and other animals and birds

Tour Program

Day 1: Nairobi – Lake Nakuru

Depart Nairobi and head North towards the Rift Valley town of Nakuru. On route you will stop for views across the Great Rift Valley, Mt Longonot and Lake Naivasha. With a picnic lunch, you will enter Lake Nakuru National Reserve, which is famous for the thousands of flamingo that inhabit the shores of the lake. In recent times, the water level of the lake has fluctuated greatly and this has affected the numbers of resident flamingos. But perhaps most importantly, this fully-fenced reserve was established as a rhino sanctuary, and black and white rhino are frequently seen on game drives - along with buffalo, lion, giraffe, waterbuck, and the elusive leopard. Late afternoon, proceed to your accommodation for dinner and overnight. Meals: Lunch, Dinner. Accommodation: Budget cottage, Nakuru National Park

Day 2: Lake Nakuru – Sanctuary Farm – Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, depart Nakuru, heading south, passing through Naivasha town and drive around the southern end of the lake, past the flower farms to tonight’s camp. After lunch you can either relax at camp or undertake any of the optional activities available around the lake. These include a boatride on the lake, hose-riding at Sanctuary Farm, visit to Elsamere (the home of the late Joy & George Adamson), or even the Crater Lake Conservancy. Return to camp for dinner and overnight. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner. Accommodation: Pitched tent, Carnelley’s Camp

Day 3: Nairobi – Mt Longonot – Maji Moto

After breakfast, depart Lake Naivasha for a trek up Mt Longonot before proceeding towards the Masai Mara. You start the trek from the main gate of the National Park, hiking vertically up the dormant volcano, rising over 630 metres to the rim of the crater at 2776 metres above sea level. The walk is very steep and craggy in parts and a trek encircling the rim and back to the gate is around nine kilometres.

But best of all, from the rim, there are spectacular views into the crater as well as the surrounding landscape taking in Lake Naivasha, open plains, towns and small villages. The crater floor is carpeted by a forest of trees which is home to all sorts of wildlife including zebra, giraffe, buffalo and hartebeest.

Once you rejoin your safari vehicle, stop for lunch before driving across the floor of the Great Rift Valley into Maasai Land north of the Masai Mara – the 7th Natural Wonder of the World. Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing at camp, where you will be welcomed by your Maasai hosts. You can then immerse yourself in traditional Maasai life and culture and explore the village and surrounding plains. There are also natural hot springs close by, where you can bath and relax with the Maasai. Check all of your equipment and get your bike ready for the days ahead. Enjoy dinner at the camp and a night camping under the African stars.
